PANJIM: In view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting at Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC)’s Margao bus stand, the Directorate of Higher Education on Monday directed the colleges in the city to be closed by noon.
A circular issued by Higher Education Director Bhushan Savoikar has also asked the Principals of the colleges to depute the students of their respective institutions to the KTC bus stand to attend the Prime Minister’s public meeting.
“In view of the visit of the Honourable Prime Minister of India on 5.2.2024, all the colleges in Margao shall be closed by 12 pm. In this connection, Principals are requested to depute the students of their respective institutions to the Margao KTC bus stand by 1 pm to attend the Prime Minister’s Public Meeting. Also, you are hereby informed that the students can avail the facility of lunch that will be provided near the meeting venue,” the circular said.
However, the circular attracted sharp criticism from the opposition which claimed that it has exposed the fear of the ruling party.
“Circular issued by Higher Education Department exposes the Fear of Most Corrupt @BJP4Goa Government on Crowd Mobilisation for @PMOIndia @narendramodi’s @BJP4India. Propaganda Meeting at Government Cost. We condemn the Circular for involving Students in Political Activity. Shame!” Goa Congress President Amit Patkar tweeted.
NSUI Goa condemned the circular and demanded that instead there should be an interaction programme of students ‘Maan ki Baat’ with the Prime Minister.
“NSUI Goa condemns the DHE notification for pressurising Margao College Students to PM Modi’s Meeting at KTC, Govt of Goa forcing college students to fill the empty chairs. We demand a Special students interaction program of students’ Maan ki Baat with PM Modi,” NSUI Goa President Nausad Chaudhary said.
After inaugurating the India Energy Week 2024 at Betul, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address a public meeting at 1.30 pm at KTC Bus Stand, Margao, on Wednesday, February 6.
