MAPUSA: Calangute Association Sports Club continued their impressive form with a comfortable 3-1 win over Velsao Sports & Cultural Club in the eighth-round match of the GFA’s Professional league played at Duler Stadium here on Thursday.
With this win Calangute Association has 15 points while Velsao SCC stay on just three points.
Calangute were leading 2-0 at the breather with the goals coming from Daryl Costa, Moises D`Sa and Gourav Kankonkar while Bersal Viegas pulled one back for Velsao.
Both teams were in a confident mood after their impressive wins in their last match, where Velsao stunned FC Goa while Calangute got the better of Salgaocar FC.
In a midfield-controlled match for the initial ten minutes, Daryl Costa put Calangute ahead in the 16th minute with a low grounder after being teed up U-20 Jobern Cardozo with a clever pass, 1-0.
Daryl almost got his second goal three minute later for Calangute but was denied by a timely intervention by defender Bersal Viegas who pushed the ball out for a corner from a long floater sent into the box by skipper Moises D’Sa.
From the corner kick taken by Vineet Bugde the ball came to a well-positioned Moises D’Sa whose stinging 25-yard shot nestled into the net leaving the keeper and the defence a mere spectator, 2-0
In the 28th minute Chandan Govenkar robbed the ball from the Velsao defender and laid it in the path of Daryl who should have buried the ball into the net with only keeper to beat, but surprisingly his low shot was kept out for a corner by keeper Roanal Gauncar.
Changing end, Velsao who were hardly featured in the match in the first session showed more urgency in their attack to get back on terms and their efforts were rewarded as they pulled one back in the 59th minute.
Inacio Colaco well taken corner found unmarked Bersal Viegas whose strong header struck the Calangute’s defender Krishnanth and the ball creeped into the goal, 2-1.
Boyed by the success Velsao kept applying pressure in search of the equaliser and had two decent attempts through Bersal Viegas who could not keep his header and placement goalwards after being put through Joseph and Rohan to the dismay of the players.
Just when Velsao were looking threatening, Calangute sealed all three points in the closing minutes of the match through an individual solo goal by Gourav Kankonkar, 3-1
