The historic city of Cuttack, known for its centuries-old communal harmony, remained tense on Sunday following fresh incidents of violence linked to Durga Puja celebrations. The unrest comes two days after clashes during an idol immersion procession.
Authorities and witnesses reported that the trouble began between 1:30 AM and 2:00 AM on Saturday in the Dargah Bazaar area. A Durga idol immersion procession heading towards the Kathajodi river was stopped by locals who objected to loud music being played late at night.

The disagreement quickly escalated into violence, with stones and glass bottles reportedly hurled from rooftops. Members of the procession retaliated, resulting in injuries to several people, including Cuttack’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.
In response, the city administration imposed a 36-hour curfew in multiple areas, including Dargah Bazaar, and temporarily shut down internet services. Political leaders across the spectrum have appealed for calm, urging residents to maintain peace during the ongoing festival season.
