A landslide in North Sikkim’s Mangan district partially blocked the Chyakoong River and affected the Teesta River, triggering concern among residents amid heightened fears following recent flooding and disasters in the region.
The landslide occurred late Saturday night near the Naga Forest area, opposite Theng Tunnel. The incident has raised alarm locally, particularly in view of the devastating 2023 Teesta flash flood and recent reports of severe flooding in neighbouring Nepal.

Authorities, however, have said there is no immediate threat of flooding downstream and have urged people not to panic or circulate unverified information on social media.
Officials said water levels at Sankalang and Phidang remain normal, although the water is muddy. The situation is being closely monitored as authorities assess the extent of the river blockage.
Officials have also cautioned that even a relatively small or temporary obstruction in a river can quickly fuel speculation online, with social media posts potentially creating fears of a major downstream flood.
Residents have been advised to rely only on official updates and avoid approaching the banks of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers along the affected stretch until the assessment is completed.
