The Election Commission (EC) will announce the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in several states on Monday, officials said. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, will make the announcement at a 4.15 pm press conference.
Though the EC’s media invite did not specify the agenda, sources confirmed the briefing will focus on the SIR schedule. The exercise is expected to begin on November 1 and likely cover the five states holding Assembly elections in 2026 — Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal — along with a few others. Some states with ongoing local body polls may be excluded temporarily.

The SIR is a comprehensive process requiring all registered voters to submit new enumeration forms, unlike the annual Special Summary Revision, which only updates existing rolls. Due to the computerisation of electoral rolls, a nationwide intensive revision has not been conducted in nearly two decades, with Bihar’s last exercise dating back to 2003.
The EC had noted in its June 24 order that rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, and large-scale changes in the electorate over 20 years make this revision necessary.
