The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across several parts of India this week, with eastern, central, southern and north-western regions expected to see increased monsoon activity.
According to the IMD’s latest forecast issued on Tuesday, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over East India during the next three to four days. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands, along with Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, are expected to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall between September 9 and 14.

Jharkhand is likely to experience widespread rainfall from September 9 to 11, while Odisha could see similar conditions between September 10 and 12. Bihar is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall on September 9 and 10, while Jharkhand may witness heavy showers from September 9 to 11. Odisha has also been warned of very heavy rainfall on September 10.
Central India likely to see more rain
Rainfall activity is also expected to increase across central India in the coming days. Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rain between September 10 and 14.
West Madhya Pradesh could experience similar conditions from September 12 to 14. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Madhya Pradesh on September 12 and 13, while Chhattisgarh may see heavy showers between September 10 and 14.
The southern peninsula is also expected to receive scattered rainfall through the week. Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep could experience more widespread rainfall from September 10 to 12. Telangana is likely to see fairly widespread to widespread rain between September 12 and 14.
The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Wind speeds could reach up to 60 kilometres per hour in some areas.
Rain activity to intensify in north-west
Rainfall activity in north-west India is expected to strengthen towards the weekend. Uttarakhand is likely to experience fairly widespread to widespread rainfall from September 10 to 14, along with thunderstorms and lightning. Himachal Pradesh could see similar weather conditions on September 13 and 14.
The IMD has also forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand throughout the September 10-14 period.
The forecast comes as the southwest monsoon remains active across several parts of the country. Heavy rainfall could affect agriculture, transport and infrastructure, particularly in vulnerable areas.
As of September 7, cumulative rainfall across India during the June 1-September 7 period stood at 642.9 mm, which was 14% below the normal rainfall of 748.3 mm.
Meanwhile, several areas of eastern and central India recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall during the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Assam received very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm, while east Uttar Pradesh, west Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and Mizoram recorded heavy rainfall ranging between 7 and 11 cm.
The IMD’s latest forecast indicates that monsoon conditions are likely to remain active across multiple regions over the coming days, with several states advised to remain alert to heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.
