PANJIM: Goa registered a convincing three-wicket win over Assam with 67 balls to spare in the U-23 State A Trophy Elite One-Day Tournament at the Kotambi Stadium B, Vadodara, on Tuesday.
Batting first, Assam were bowled out for 215 runs in 42.4 overs. Goa chased down the target in 38.5 overs, finishing at 216 for 7 to secure victory. Winning the toss, Goa opted to bowl first.
For Assam, Roshan Topno top-scored with 53 runs, while Mayukh Hazarika (37), Sumit Kashyap (32), and Rohit Sen (31) made useful contributions.
Goa’s Anuj Yadav emerged as the most effective bowler, claiming four wickets for just 22 runs. Kutbudin Jamadar provided solid support, picking up three wickets for 26 runs. Lakhmesh Pawne, Kaustubh Pingulkar, and Manish Kakode took one wicket each. In pursuit of 216, Goa built a strong foundation with a crucial 102-run partnership for the second wicket between Sanath Nevagi and Chittem Jeevankumar. Sanath narrowly missed out on a century for the second consecutive match, scoring 85 runs off 63 balls with nine fours and five sixes.
He had also been dismissed in the nineties in the previous game. Jeevankumar, after a slow start, accelerated to make 71 runs from 90 balls, hitting six boundaries and two sixes. He fell just before the team crossed the finishing line. Goa lost wickets in middle overs but Shivendra Bhujbal (14 not out) and Anuj Yadav (2 not out) steered Goa to victory without further damage.
Goa, placed in the Elite Group B, now have four points from two matches. Their next fixture is against Gujarat at the Motibaug Ground in Vadodara on Thursday, November 13.
