One step closer to the big kick-off

As the days count down towards the big kick-off of the second edition of the ISL, Café catches up with fans of FC Goa across the state, and asks them how they see the upcoming season shaping up

Zico is back, having proved his mettle the
last time around. Lucio, one of the world’s greatest defenders who scores goals
(including the winning goal in the finals of the 2009 FIFA Confederations
Cup), is in the bag. The new man between the sticks, Elinton Andrade,
helped the Portugal National Football Team win the FIFA Beach Soccer
World Cup 2015 and has been a standout performer with Marseille. However, will
this be enough to make the fans happy? That is the question.

“Quite honestly, everyone hopes that this
will be our year. That this will be the year we lay our hands on some
silverware; that we manage to stamp our authority as serious title contenders.
However, there have been many outgoing players who excelled last year, like
Santos, who almost carried us single-handedly sometimes. There are perhaps not
as many incoming ones that really capture the imagination, apart from Lucio,
which I think is a problem for many fans, in terms of belief,” says Franky
Fernandes from Margao.

Perhaps a few solid performances from the
squad will be all it takes to win doubters over. And as the fans proved last
year, no matter what the outcome, they will always be the 12th man, egging the
squad on, for better or worse. Força Goa!
