The Election Commission of India (EC) is expected to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) deadline for Uttar Pradesh and several other states, senior EC sources mentioned. A final decision is anticipated on Thursday, when top officials meet to assess the progress of digitising and submitting enumeration forms.
Sources indicated that West Bengal is also among the states likely to receive an extension. The Commission has already pushed Kerala’s deadline from December 11 to December 18 following earlier delays.

The move comes after sustained criticism from Opposition parties, who argued that the EC’s timelines were “impractical” and placed excessive pressure on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) while causing inconvenience to voters.
In an all-party meeting, the Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), CPI(M) and Samajwadi Party (SP) accused the Commission of overlooking on-ground challenges and hastily enforcing an unrealistic revision schedule. Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said the EC had “finally realised” the process could not be completed within the earlier timeline. He urged the Commission to adopt the more detailed framework used during the 2003 revision and claimed the government’s reluctance to allow discussions on SIR in Parliament showed it was “unwilling to let Parliament function.”
