Koraput district in southern Odisha, predominantly inhabited by tribal communities, faced controversy over a planned ban on non-vegetarian food on Republic Day. The district magistrate had ordered a prohibition on the sale of meat, fish, chicken, eggs, and other non-vegetarian items following the suggestion of the District Level Republic Day Preparatory Committee.
The move sparked public outrage, with tribal leaders and local representatives arguing that the government should not dictate dietary choices. Congress MLA Ram Chandra Kadam and former MP Pradeep Majhi criticised the order, calling it unnecessary and insensitive.

Following the backlash, the district magistrate revoked the ban, clarifying that the order would no longer be in effect.
