Concerned citizens of Panjim on Wednesday met the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) Mayor to voice strong opposition to a proposed new casino vessel on the Mandovi river, which is intended to replace an existing smaller casino.

A delegation of Ponjekars, submitted their objections and urged the civic body to take a clear stand against any expansion or replacement of casino operations in the city.
Freedom fighter Libia Lobo Sardesai also joined the citizens during the meeting and expressed her firm opposition to casinos in Goa. “We want to eat fish, not the dirt of casinos,” she said, stressing that riverine ecology, livelihoods, and the cultural fabric of Goa were being threatened by casino activities.
The citizens maintained that allowing a larger casino vessel would only worsen traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and social issues in the capital city. They called upon the CCP to pass a resolution opposing the proposal and to convey the city’s stance to the state government.
The Mayor reportedly assured the delegation that their concerns would be placed before the council for discussion.
