Assam Police, accompanied by Delhi Police personnel, arrived at Congress leader Pawan Khera’s residence in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, on Tuesday morning, escalating the political row sparked by his recent allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. Khera, who serves as the head of the Congress Media and Publicity Department, had alleged at a press conference on Sunday that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma possesses three passports and that the Sarma family has business interests worth ₹52,000 crore in the United States.When the police reached his Delhi home, Khera was not present. Party sources confirmed that he is currently in Hyderabad. The officers carried out a search of the premises and later stated that they had recovered “some objectionable documents.” The team left a little after 1 pm. The nature of the documents seized has not yet been disclosed.Reacting to the developments, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Khera had “run away from Guwahati yesterday” and claimed he was now trying to evade legal scrutiny by moving to Hyderabad. “The law will take its own course,” the Chief Minister told media . He had earlier dismissed the allegations as baseless and, in a sharp jibe, warned that “Pawan Khera, Pawan peda ban jaayega,” a remark aimed at belittling the Congress spokesperson.The search operation followed an FIR filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma on Monday in response to Khera’s accusations. The Congress leader has not yet commented on the latest police action, though party colleagues have called it a politically motivated attempt to intimidate him.With the FIR, the search, and the heated political exchanges, the confrontation between the Congress and the Assam government appears set to intensify, turning the passport row into a full-fledged political flashpoint.
