Young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-anticipated India debut could be delayed due to the ongoing unrest in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where India are scheduled to face Ireland in a two-match T20I series later this month.
The 15-year-old prodigy was included in India’s squad for the Ireland and England tours after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign. Sooryavanshi emerged as one of the breakout stars of the tournament, scoring 368 runs in 11 matches at a staggering strike rate of 237.31. His fearless strokeplay and maturity beyond his years earned widespread praise, with many expecting him to make his international debut in the opening T20I against Ireland on June 26.

However, the deteriorating security situation in Belfast has cast uncertainty over the series. The unrest erupted after a knife attack in which 40-year-old Stephen Ogilvie sustained serious injuries. A 30-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
The incident triggered anti-immigration protests that later descended into violence. Several vehicles and properties were set ablaze, roads were blocked with barricades and public transport services were disrupted. Reports also suggested that homes linked to migrant families were targeted. More than 16 people have been arrested, while at least 12 police officers were injured during the disturbances.
Cricket Ireland monitoring situation
Cricket Ireland has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation in consultation with local authorities and provincial unions. In an official statement, the governing body stressed that the safety and security of players, coaches, match officials and supporters remains its highest priority.
“Cricket Ireland is continuing to monitor the situation in areas currently experiencing community unrest and will make a decision within the next 48 hours regarding this Sunday’s Irish Senior Cup and National Cup fixtures,” the board said.
“We remain in close consultation with the relevant authorities and our provincial unions. The safety and security of players, coaches, match officials and supporters is paramount in our deliberations. Further updates will be provided as they become available,” it added.
The board has already cancelled the Inter-Provincial T20 Festival in Lisburn due to the unrest. While the statement did not specifically address India’s upcoming matches, concerns remain over whether the fixtures in Belfast will proceed as planned.

India are scheduled to face Ireland on June 26 and June 28 at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast. The series is also expected to mark the beginning of Shreyas Iyer’s tenure as India’s T20I captain.
For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a debut would make him the youngest men’s cricketer to represent India, surpassing the record held by Sachin Tendulkar. For now, however, the spotlight remains firmly on Belfast, with cricket authorities prioritising safety as the countdown to the high-profile series continues.
