The death toll in the garbage dump collapse at the Moshi waste depot in Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad has risen to eight after rescue teams recovered the bodies of seven more victims from the damaged administrative building of the Waste-to-Energy project on Saturday. Rescue operations are continuing as one person remains missing.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at around 1:30 pm when a massive mound of garbage collapsed onto the administrative building within the Moshi garbage depot, operated by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). A total of 23 people were trapped in the accident, including 22 who were inside the building and one who was buried beneath a garbage heap adjacent to the structure. Five people managed to escape safely immediately after the collapse.

A massive multi-agency rescue operation was launched involving the Indian Army, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, PMRDA Fire Services and the police. Rescue personnel managed to pull nine people alive from the collapsed building on the first day, while search efforts continued for those still trapped.
On Thursday, rescuers located Bhavesh Wani inside the debris and rushed him to hospital, where he was declared dead by doctors. Rescue operations continued over the following days under difficult conditions, as the damaged building remained structurally unstable and posed significant risks to emergency personnel.
To facilitate the operation, authorities deployed heavy machinery, including 12 excavators, JCB machines and dumpers, to remove debris surrounding the building and create safe access routes for rescue teams. The search for the remaining missing person is still underway.
