BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the rumours following a high-level review meeting of the Indian cricket board in Mumbai on Thursday, September 3. Saikia urged people not to fuel unnecessary speculation around Rohit’s international future, pointing to the batter’s recent performances as evidence of his continued value to the team.

“He is playing superbly in all matches. He scored 130 in the last match he played. So, what more do you want?” Saikia said. He added that there was no need to create speculation about Rohit’s future.
The comments come amid growing attention on Rohit’s ODI career and India’s plans for the next phase of the format. The former captain remains one of the country’s most experienced white-ball players and is widely expected to be considered for India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit has already stepped away from T20I cricket and Test cricket, making his ODI future the remaining major question surrounding his international career. However, his recent performances have continued to keep him in contention.
The BCCI secretary’s remarks suggest that the board is not currently treating Rohit’s ODI career as an immediate retirement issue. Instead, his performances will remain a key factor as India assesses its options ahead of major future tournaments.
The September 3 review meeting was attended by India head coach Gautam Gambhir, ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, BCCI president Mithun Manhas and secretary Saikia. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar, whose tenure is scheduled to end in October this year, was notably absent from the meeting at the BCCI headquarters.
Rohit’s place in the ODI setup is likely to remain a talking point as India begins shaping its plans for the 2027 World Cup. For now, however, the BCCI appears keen to focus on his performances rather than speculation about retirement.
