The all-vegetarian menu served to world leaders at the BRICS summit dinner has triggered a political controversy, with Congress leaders accusing the BJP-led government of attempting to promote vegetarianism at an international gathering.
The visiting leaders attending the summit were served an elaborate vegetarian spread featuring more than 10 dishes, with the menu offering a contemporary take on Indian cuisine.

The starters included Khumb Galauti, while the main course featured dishes such as paneer, mushrooms, millet pulao and beetroot raita. The dessert selection included Shahdoot firni and fruit cream served with jalebi.
The absence of non-vegetarian dishes, however, drew criticism from the Congress.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, reacting to the menu in a post on social media platform X, highlighted the popularity of non-vegetarian food in India.
“For the record: 80% of Indians are non-vegetarian. Indian non-vegetarian food is delicious. As are my sister’s chole bhature,” Gandhi wrote.
The remarks have added a political dimension to what was otherwise presented as a showcase of Indian vegetarian cuisine for visiting BRICS leaders.
