Zimbabwe veteran Brendan Taylor has moved past Sachin Tendulkar to become the longest-serving player in men’s ODI history, achieving the milestone during Zimbabwe’s first ODI against Australia in Harare on Tuesday.
Taylor’s ODI career has now stretched to 22 years and four months, edging ahead of Tendulkar’s 22 years and three months. Tendulkar’s illustrious ODI career ended in 2012, while Taylor’s latest appearance has extended his remarkable journey in international cricket.

The milestone adds another significant chapter to Taylor’s career, which began with his ODI debut in 2004. The 40-year-old has gone on to become one of Zimbabwe’s most accomplished batters and, before Tuesday’s match, had registered a national-record 11 ODI centuries in 207 matches.
While Taylor now holds the longevity record, Tendulkar continues to dominate several major ODI statistical categories. The former India batter remains the format’s leading run-scorer with 18,426 runs and also holds the record for the most ODI appearances, having played 463 matches.
Taylor’s route back to international cricket has also been anything but straightforward. He retired from international cricket in 2021, but his career was interrupted by a major controversy. In 2022, he was handed a three-and-a-half-year ban after being found to have breached the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping codes.
After completing his suspension, Taylor returned to international cricket in 2025. His comeback came as Zimbabwe prepared for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which the country is set to co-host with South Africa and Namibia.
His return has now culminated in a record that places him alongside one of the greatest names in cricket history. Overtaking Tendulkar for career longevity is particularly notable given the Indian batting legend’s extraordinary 22-year presence in the ODI format.
Taylor’s record came as Australia and Zimbabwe met in an ODI in Zimbabwe for the first time in 12 years. Australia won the toss and elected to bat.
There was also a strong connection to the previous ODI played between the two sides in Zimbabwe. Australian captain Mitchell Marsh was one of three players involved in Tuesday’s match who had also featured in Zimbabwe’s last ODI victory over Australia in 2014. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza and Taylor were the other two survivors from that memorable match.
The latest meeting therefore carried both historical and personal significance for Taylor. As Zimbabwe’s veteran batter returned to the international stage, he not only helped mark a new chapter in the country’s cricketing story but also surpassed Tendulkar in one of the format’s most unusual longevity records.
Tendulkar’s records for ODI runs and appearances remain untouched, but Taylor’s latest achievement gives Zimbabwean cricket another landmark moment to celebrate.
