Benaulim MLA favours legalisation of bullfights

PANJIM: Aam Aadmi party (AAP) Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas said that he will move a Private Member’s Bill, for the legalisation of bullfights or dhirios in the State.  

Viegas said that since dhirios are organised during certain months he has sought to exempt this traditional sports from the cruelty. He said that cruelty to animals can be stopped by amending the Act. He reasoned that corruption in this sport would end and the State can generate around Rs 500 crore from this heritage sport from its legalisation.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, people of Benaulim constituency and some bull owners have supported him. Sardessai said that dhirios are cultural aspect of Goa and it needs to be preserved. “I am of the opinion that if Jallikattu can be allowed in Tamil Nadu then why not dhirios in Goa?” he asked. 

The bullfights or dhirios in the State were banned by a judgment by the High Court of Bombay at Goa in 1998.
