PANJIM: Following protests by advocates, the Court of Principal District & Sessions Judge, North Goa, Panjim has postponed plans to shift to the new premises at Patto.
A notice issued on August 7, signed by Principal District and Sessions judge BP Deshpande, says “The advocates, litigants and public in general are hereby informed that the shifting of four civil and criminal courts which are presently housed in the Old Civil and Criminal Court, Panjim to the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th floors of the ‘Spaces’ building at Patto Plaza, has been postponed until further orders.”
Lawyers practicing at Panjim had opposed the proposed shifting of the lower courts.
A notice had been earlier published that the lower courts were to be shifted to ‘Spaces’ at Patto plaza from July 27 onwards, though no such relocation has taken place yet.
Around 200 advocates had decided to challenge the North District Court’s order directing the lower courts to shift to Patto by August 10.
The lawyers demanded that government begin construction of the Merces court complex, which has been pending since 2009.
when the then Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court Swantanter Kumar had laid the foundation stone.
