The candid interview on Herald on March 8 with Adv. Vidya Shet Tanavade, Chairperson of Goa State Commission for Women under the heading “15% rise in domestic violence cases every year”, on page 7 indeed threw up some interesting facts, throwing light on many instances or cases which are contrary to what is been made to believe by some people going by their complaints on specific cases like domestic violence etc and it is interesting also to note that men are increasingly filing cases against women and which the GCW Chairperson admits to be genuine.
It is generally very much true that many of the domestic violence cases are genuine and a fact that more genuine cases are not filed or not reported due to fear of repercussions and this becomes real cause for introspection for the authorities as mostly lack of education, ignorance of laws and individual rights are other factors for not filing genuine cases.
A number of problems concerning women could be solved by going into the heart of the matter with a sincere mind setting aside personal ego’s, compromising and understanding matters, looking into the larger interests involved before relationships land up in court and end up in a divorce and the fallout leading to negative impact on the people involved.
It is also admitted by the Chairperson that in Goa many dowry cases are filed falsely by women, as Indian laws are more sensitive towards women and scrupulous women take undue advantage of the same.
The general observation more so in Goa is that now women have less time for their husbands and children as many parents are found over indulging in social media dedicatedly by following up TV serials, thus giving less or no time for interpersonal relationships.
The International Women’s Day originally called International Working Women’s Day commemorates the movement for women’s rights and was adopted by the United Nations in 1975.
It has been a long time since then and women have come a long long way and achieved success in all walks of life but yet a lot remains to be done for them as women in many parts of the world including India are going through a harrowing time to assert their rights and also a lot of them misuse their position being a woman. Let us hope that women’s upliftment globally reaches new heights and better sense in some women prevails. Only then we can see a better world but before the wheat is to be separated from the chaff.
