The murderous attempt on two youth outside a pub in the capital city some months back is a fall out of this pub culture. There is no denying that the number of patients with liver problem related to alcoholism who are treated at the GMC hospital is on the rise. All this is so because Goans start drinking at a very young age. Of course Indians do not wear bikini while going for a swim. One will see Goan women entering the sea wearing a night-gown and not a bikini. One cannot stop the foreign tourist from wearing the bikini. It is their culture. If wearing bikini on the beaches is not banned on the other beaches in the country, how can it be banned in Goa? If this is having an adverse affect on the youth of the state, then it is for the government to allow the foreign tourists, who want to wear bikinis, only on isolated beaches or have restricted areas on the beaches only for them. But one cannot stop foreign tourist from coming to the state.
Tourism is the bread and butter of our state in the absence of mining activities. It is pertinent to note that dance bars have been banned in Mumbai because of it’s adverse effect on the youth. We need to strike a balance on providing entertainment to the foreign tourists and at the same time protecting` our youth from the ill effects of the tourism related entertainment.
The Goa government can take appropriate measures to provide wholesome entertainment for the foreign tourists and at the same time take corrective measures like banning the youth from entering the pubs so as to protect them from the ill-effects of the pub culture. Of course what the ladies dress is a matter of their own choice and not one can dictate terms in this matter. No one can likewise suppress the freedom of movement of people and stop them from entering the pub if he/she is a major.
