MARGAO: To instill a sense of security among voters besides strengthening the law and order ahead of the upcoming Goa Assembly elections scheduled on February 14, the South Goa Police have commenced thorough checks at vital locations such as the railway station, bus stand and others.
A senior police officer from Margao said they are fully geared up to ensure free and fair polls.

Nine companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in Salcete, Quepem and Ponda talukas.
The Central Paramilitary Forces including the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Border Security Force (BSF) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been posted at several vital locations in Salcete along with local policemen.
The senior official said police have also intensified checking and have also adopted other safety measures as well.
He said in days to come, more companies of paramilitary forces will arrive in the State to ensure peaceful conduct of assembly polls.
He said the paramilitary forces along with local police besides patrolling the sensitive areas, will carry out foot marches as part of confidence-building measures.
Meanwhile, the South Goa Police have started drive against motorists involved in rash and negligent driving under the influence of alcohol. The police have arrested several motorists and have registered cases against the violators under Sections 279, 336 and 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
The Police have also booked candidates and others for violating the COVID-19 guidelines issued by Election Commission of India and South Goa District Magistrate.
The Police said by doing so these violators have disobeyed the order promulgated by a public servant and have also acted in a negligent manner.
This week, the police in Salcete taluka have registered the two offences based on a complaint by Deputy Collector and Margao SDO Prasad G Volvoikar under Sections 188 and 269 of the IPC.
Meanwhile, five police stations in Salcete have identified history sheeters who are likely to pose a threat to peace during the polling process and have initiated action against such persons.
Despite warning these history sheeters, the police are maintaining a strict watch on their activities as precautionary measure.
