PANJIM: The State’ Disaster Management Team has braced up for heavy rainfall in the State arising from Cyclone Nisarga.

A senior government official told Herald that the disaster response and rescue teams are in place to respond to any potential crisis during the cyclone as well as the monsoon ahead. “We are watching the situation. Our teams are in place to handle the situation as it arises,” an official said.

The North District Control Room has been operational to receive calls related to the monsoon. North Collector R Menaka, who also heads the disaster management cell, said that the taluka-level teams have been kept in preparedness.

“Pruning of dangerous trees are being taken up, areas prone to water logging are being monitored, shelter homes have been kept in preparedness to accommodate people and in case of need, Electricity Department has been kept in preparedness to take precautions of low-lying electricity lines,” she said in a message to Herald through her office.

The Disaster Management Team has also advised fishermen not to venture into the sea.

No untoward incident was reported on Tuesday, though Fire & Emergency Services had received 20 calls till 5 pm. All the calls were related to uprooting of trees which were attended to.

The Water Resources Department has also readied its machinery to pump out water from flooded areas, an official said.
