PANJIM: The Transport Department has informed that tourist taxi operators, who fail to install digital fare meters to their vehicles, despite given an opportunity, will have to face proceedings before a magistrate.

The Department, in its status report submitted to the High Court of Bombay at Goa on the digital meters, said that enforcement officials are conducting checking of taxis over the rule’s implementation.

“Enforcement agencies have started checking for taxis to ascertain whether the digital fare meters have been installed... 1,457 vehicles were found not to have installed the meters and challans have been issued to the permit holders... Permit holder will have the option of installing the meter within one month if the offence is to be compounded, failing which the proceedings will continue before the Magistrate,” reads the 16-page status report submitted before the Division Bench.

Permits of those vehicles issued notices on failure to install the meters are treated as cancelled and are not allowed by the Transport Department to operate without the permit unless they install the meters.

A total of 5,732 vehicles have installed the digital meters as on November 27, 2021 while 1,943 booking of vehicles are awaiting installation.
