family member being stuck in
the lift for half an hour due the problem. Not a joke right? Well there are
many other cases that locals speak about.
-“My father-in-law is sick in the house
and every time there is a power cut it becomes suffocating for him,” says
Saloni Mayekar Resident in Ribandar. At her place, the electricity goes around
three to four times in a day and sometimes maximum 3 hours”

“I get those chills. I stay alone with
roommates in an inside lane and it is difficult for us, never know who is
watching us in those hours. We walk together while coming home or always take
someone if we go down. We close our door and put candles, because you never
know!”, says an exasperated Lilian Dias of Sanquelim
Power cuts are gruesome!
You can expect the worst to happen because of its intrusion in
our daily activities which otherwise goes unnoticed. What is the reason for so
many power cuts?
According to sources, due to wire lines being old, and lines
passing through areas with many trees power cuts are bound to happen. During
the rains things are worsened with strong breeze and the movement of the
wiring. The electricity department has been working on having underground
wiring in all the areas; however it was necessary that for these procedures to
be done before monsoon. As per sources, in some places like Porvorim the work
is going on for the underground wiring, but the rest are still struggling;
apparently, it is also reportedly due to some political interference. That is a
problem on an official level, but here, locals are tensed about the little
things when there is no electricity.
“It is impossible to leave all the doors and windows open due to
the rains and mosquitoes. My cooking and the other work get delayed since
everything depends on electricity these days. No mixer, no fridge, kids might
touch anything in the dark, and the list goes on. What’s worse is that the
power cuts are mostly in the evenings,” points our Saloni Mayekar of Ribandar
While some face these ups and downs at home, the rest suffer
business losses. Datta Chari from Pillar who runs a flour mill complains on
losing customers. “There no work production after the power cuts,” he states.
“There is some work going on under the electricity department.
We do not have electricity for nearly three hours every day. All our orders are
pending, we are losing clients and they are diverted to other places. This is a
huge loss for us,” he shares.
This is not the only case. Getting delayed in work, or facing
one of those incidents where your document is unsaved and suddenly the current
is out! Hope one has to never face that. Many businesses are worst hit. Salons
for instance. Imagine a salon without electricity. Surely big salons have those
generators but the rest simply run out of business. And you don’t want to know
what happens when your mobile phones are not charged during power cuts! There’s
a whole separate list of problems for that alone.
Whatever
it is, we have to be prepared this season for all the problems, because the
power cuts can be nasty! Charge your phones, cook earlier, take the staircase
not lift, keep emergency lights, candles, and lastly, make sure the earthing
for your homes is proper.
