Jemimah Rodrigues produced a batting masterclass as India pulled off a sensational chase against Australia to book their spot in the ICC Women’s World Cup final in Navi Mumbai on Thursday, October 30. Chasing a huge total built on Phoebe Litchfield’s 119, Ellyse Perry’s 77, and Ashleigh Gardner’s 63, India recovered from early stumbles thanks to a stunning 167-run stand between Rodrigues (127) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (89). The hosts crossed the line in 48.3 overs, winning by five wickets to set up a thrilling final clash with South Africa.
Rodrigues’ composed 127, which included 14 boundaries, was filled with quick singles and doubles that kept the scoreboard ticking. Overwhelmed by emotion, she broke down in tears as her teammates rushed to celebrate the victory. Her journey has been far from easy — after being left out of the 2022 World Cup squad and benched earlier in this tournament, she was promoted to No. 3 before the semifinal and responded with the innings of her life.
Known for her lively personality and viral dance moves, Rodrigues stayed calm under immense pressure. “When I reached my fifty and hundred, I didn’t celebrate,” she revealed. “I looked at our hotel and thought — what would make me happier tomorrow morning? A fifty, a hundred, or India winning? And I knew it was India winning.”
Struggles with mental health
Rodrigues opened up about battling anxiety and self-doubt in the weeks leading up to the semifinal. “I’ll be very vulnerable here because someone watching might be going through the same thing,” she said. “I was struggling with anxiety at the start of the tournament. I’d call my mom and cry every day because when you’re anxious, you just feel numb.” She credited her Christian faith for giving her strength, quoting scripture: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. And today, joy came — but I’m still weeping.”
