As a gala evening, that included delectable Indo-Portuguese
cuisine, dance, music and merriment, began to wind down, all eyes turned to the
stage as an unassuming figure ambled onto it. This figure was none other than
Cielda Pereira, a girl from the quiet village of Betalbatim, who has been
lauded in recent times for the part she played in the making of the soundtrack
of the Konkani movie ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’.
Herald Café: You have taken massive strides forward with
your contribution to the Konkani movie ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’. How does one make
a transition from being the quiet girl from the little village of Betalbatim to
this?

Cielda Pereira: I started my journey when I was in school. I
started participating in different inter school competitions and also learnt
the guitar at the same time. I also started singing in the choir along with my
mother. But singing in a choir is completely different from the singing that I
do now.
I had never thought that I will become a singer. Soon after
my 12th I took up singing seriously. It feels great to be at this level, where
I am at present. ‘Nachom-ia Kumpasar’ was a great achievement for me. Besides
that people also know me as Voice of Goa runner up and as the winner of Goencho
Awaz organised by Herald. It feels really good that I made my parents and the
people of Betalbatim proud with my performance. I would like to say thanks to
Goa and my parents for always supporting me.
HC: What was the most challenging part of the ‘Nachom-ia
Kumpasar’ process? Was it the sheer nature of having to match up to a singer as
iconic as Lorna?
CP: Lorna is a very experienced singer and there cannot be
another Lorna. There is no stress to match up to her. I had to give my own
voice to the song. The most difficult and challenging part was to give
appropriate feeling to the song while singing since the actress has done an
amazing job. I had to match up to her performance. I didn’t copy any voice.
It’s my natural way of singing.
HC: Is the long term plan to dedicate yourself to the
playback aspect of the music industry, making an appearance on soundtracks such
as these? Or is the bigger aim to develop yourself as an independent artiste?
CP: I want to come up with my own song and my own album. It
will take some time, may be a year or two. Currently I have some projects in
hand for the playback singing and some albums as well.
