During a time when foreign comic strips
dominated the Indian market in the 1960s, a young cartoonist by the name of
Pran breathed life into Indian comics with characters based on local themes. Pran
Kumar Sharma’s first creation – the adventurous teenage boy Daabu and Prof
Adhikari – marked the entry of local cartoon characters into the comics scene
in India and was well received by the young Indian audience. However, it was
his next creation – Chacha Chaudhary and his sidekick, Sabu that made Pran
popular. Pran Kumar Sharma, better known as Pran, breathed his last yesterday
morning while battling colon cancer.

Although the popularity of Pran’s comic
characters was relatively less in Goa, fans will testify to the fact that he
was a big hit in other parts of India. Chacha Chaudhary, a common man wearing a
huge red turban who used to fight everyone, from thugs to petty crooks, but was
petrified of his wife, had become a lovable figure amidst comic loves. His
companion – a giant man called Sabu was apparently from outer space. The magic
that Pran created with Chacha Chaudhary and Sabu was well received by the
audiences.
Born in Kasur near Lahore, Pran started his
career in 1960 as a cartoonist for Delhi-based newspaper ‘Milap’. His first
creation was comic strip ‘Daabu’, which was popular among readers. In 1969,
Pran sketched Chacha Chaudhary for Hindi magazine ‘Lotpot’, which earned him
recognition and he soon became a household name. Pran went on to create cartoon
characters like Billoo, Raman, Shrimatiji and others, which are regularly
published in Indian magazines. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in
2001 from Indian Institute of Cartoonists and he was included in list of ‘People
of the year 1995’ by Limca Book of Records for popularising comics in India.
