Two hurt in Quepem accident
CURCHOREM: Two occupants of a car escaped with minor injuries after their vehicle hit two trees near Karali in Quepem in the early hours of Sunday.
According o reports, the accident occurred at about 1.30 am when the car (GA-09-A-2711) was proceeding from Quepem towards Margao.
Evangelisto D’Costa, who resides about 50 mtrs away from the accident site, informed that he woke-up to the loud sound of the accident and rushed to the spot. “Both the occupants of the car were safe with minor injuries though the car was severely damaged,” said D’Costa.
“The portion of road where the car first hit the tree is very narrow with a compound wall on one side and huge trees on the other side,” said D’Costa.
When contacted, Quepem PI Ram Asare said it was self-accident and the car driver has been challaned for rash and negligent driving.
Road safety Week at Calangute
CALANGUTE: JCI Calangute in collaboration with Calangute Traffic Police Cell organised various programmes to mark Road Safety Week-2014.
The highlight of the programme included the release of ‘important contacts’ stickers by the Calangute sarpanch and panch members, training of students from Vidyaniketan High School on controlling traffic, distribution of stickers for buses, auto and taxi drivers, pasting black spot stickers on headlights of motorcycles and cars, safety messages on buses and at junctions of Calangute. The programme was attended by the Calangute sarpanch and panchas, citizens, Calangute Traffic Cell PI Rahul T Parab and officials. JCI Calangute President Chandan Harmalkar was also present.
Hot-mix carpet for Velsao-Pale roads
DABOLIM: Minister for Forest and Environment Alina Saldanha inaugurated the hot-mixing of the internal roads at Velsao-Pale. The hot-mixing work is being carried out from St Stephan’s Chapel Pale to Bellem-Velsao, Digtollem-Velsao railway gate and the approach road to Velsao beach, a stretch of about 4.2 kms.
Speaking on the occasion, Saldanha said another electoral promise of her late husband Matanhy Saldanha had been fulfilled for residents of Velsao-Pale.
The bridge constructed by GSIDC at Dando Mollo Velsao is also nearing completion, said Saldanha in a press note.
MBNKS extends support to laid-off workers
MAYEM: Members of Mayem Bhuvimochan Nagarik Kruti Samiti (MBNKS) have extended their support to the agitating employees of a mining company who have been served with termination notices. MBNKS President Kashinath Mayekar has demanded that the company retain the employees by providing them all requisite facilities.
Secretary Sakharam Pednekar said a major part of mining activities of the mining company comes under the ambit of Mayem constituency by acquiring 33 lakh sq mtrs of land under lease, due to which the company is bound to retain the employees on their rolls. Vice President Yeshwant Karbhatkar, Adv Chandrashekhar Naik, Harichandra Tari, Kalidas Kavlekar and others were also present.
Governor lauds special children
MAYEM: Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo has called upon social institutions to put in united efforts to give special attention towards special children.
The Governor was speaking after inaugurating annual sports seminar of Keshav Sewa Sadhna’s Narayan Zantye School for special children at Narayan Zantye College of Commerce Bicholim sports ground on Sunday. School Chairman Sagar Shetye, Makarand Kamat, Ketki Khanolkar and Sanjana Prabhudesai were present on the occasion.
Governor Wanchoo also lauded the efforts of special children for making successful efforts to shine in sports activities at the international level. “It is necessary to increase the strength of teachers in such schools in Goa as the existing strength of teachers is falling short to cover a total strength of about 18,000 special children in Goa,” he added. Earlier, the Governor declared he games open by unfurling the national flag.
