Legendary country singer and philanthropist Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer, her representatives confirmed to PEOPLE on August 25.
Parton died at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, where she had been admitted four days earlier. The type of cancer was not disclosed. Her family said she was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death.

Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced the news in an Instagram video, describing Parton as a beloved aunt, sister and grandmother. He said the singer had asked him years ago to make the announcement when the time came.
Parton had acknowledged experiencing health problems in a recent interview, saying she was still recovering but remained committed to completing her work. She had reportedly also been dealing with kidney and autoimmune issues.
A music icon, Parton became the best-selling female country music artist, selling more than 160 million albums worldwide. Her celebrated career included hits such as Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You. She was also known for her philanthropy, including the Imagination Library, which donated millions of books to children worldwide.
