Goans love their fish and can’t do without it. But then this main item has become a luxury for Goans because of prohibitive prices. The government’s efforts to sell fish at a fair price through mobile vans provided a small relief to some people but these vans are not seen in many villages now.
The fish catch by the trawlers, in normal times, is said to be very good. But the problem is that 50 percent of the catch is exported and the bulk of the other half is grabbed by the hotels. The situation calls for far more serious efforts. The Fisheries Department should pursue its plan to increase the fish catch by the sea cage fishing method. It should see that sufficient fish is available in the local market at affordable prices so that the people are not deprived of their staple food – rice and fish curry.
