Helmets alone can’t save lives

This has reference to the news item published in Herald on Wednesday. It is true youth account for 80% of deaths resulting from road accidents. However, the higher death ratio is not the result of youth not wearing helmets, but because they do not follow the traffic rules. Some use mobiles while riding, while others ride fast, overtake unnecessarily and ride zigzag. The RTO is responsible in some cases for issuing licences to the under-aged youth with the consent of their parents and also through agents by taking bribes. I do not mind using helmets on highways but not all roads. The Transport Minister and the RTO director unnecessarily impose helmet rule while there is stiff opposition from people everywhere. The chief minister should relax the helmet rules on all roads due to difficulties of carrying helmets everywhere we go. I hope that the chief minister will overrule the dictate of the Transport Minister as per wishes of the people.
