Sarvan local assaulted
BICHOLIM: Bicholim Police arrested six persons on charges of abusing and assaulting a man at Gokulwadi-Sanquelim.
According to Bicholim Police, Naresh Devasi of Govind Nagar, Sarvan, complained that the six accused persons along with three others abused his brother, Medharam, and assaulted him with punches and slaps, causing injuries.
The complainant further stated that the accused also threatened his brother with dire consequence. Six persons were arrested and released on bail. Police is investigating.
Assault plaint at Maina-Curtorim
MARGAO: The Maina-Curtorim police on a complaint filed by Agnelo D’Souza, a resident of Dagwal-Raia, has registered an offence under sections 504, 324, 427 read with 34 IPC, against Camilo Fernandes and Pedro Santan Fernandes, both residents of Dagwal Raia.
D’Souza in his complaint has stated that the accused Camilo and Pedro, with common intention, abused him and his friends with filthy language and assaulted them with a cricket bat and stumps.
He further stated that the accused bit him on his right shoulder and that both the accused damaged his two wheeler causing damages of Rs 8000.
ASI Rohidas K Velip is conducting further investigations into the case.
Bail pleas in explosives case rejected
MARGAO: South Goa district and sessions court judge, Nutan Sardessai, on Monday rejected the bail applications of Juizino Fernandes, a resident of Copelabhat, Ambaulim, Quepem and Vinaykumar Shety, a native of Yellapur, Karnataka, in connection with illegal possession of huge quantity of explosives.
Public prosecutor Subhash Dessai, representing Quepem police vehemently objected to the bail application by arguing that both the accused persons along with others are booked for very serious offences under Unlawful Activities & Explosives Substances Act.
He further contended that the father of applicant Shety is presently absconding and that the truck used for transportation of the questionable explosives is yet to be recovered. He further submitted that the truck driver’s whereabouts are also not known. Considering the magnitude of the crime and its seriousness, he prayed that anticipatory bail to both the applicants be rejected and that there was no change in the circumstances after rejection of previous bail applications.
Kerala native held in robbery case
MARGAO: A native of Kerala, Moidunny Kutty Kolakkatty Ali alias Sunil, 41, who was wanted by the police in connection with a case of attempted murder and robbery, which was reported at around 11.30 pm along the Nuvem bypass road on January 23, has been arrested by the Maina-Curtorim police.
Sunil was produced before the JMFC, Margao and has been remanded for five days police custody.
The accused Sunil, along with three others involved in the case was absconding after the incident.
According to police, on January 23, accused Sunil along with three others, waylaid Arun Gopal who was travelling on a motorcycle along with Mohammas Gaffy at Nuvem bypass and brutally assaulted Gaffy with a sharp weapon causing serious injuries all over his body. The accused further snatched a bag he was carrying containing cash of more than Rs 1 lakh ~ the day’s earnings from sale of liquor from three wine shops owned by Nitin Nair, another native of Kerala who is residing at Nuvem.
Police said that the accused had previous enmity with Nair and also with Gaffy when all three were employed in Dubai.
Fire at Verna vehicles showroom
DABOLIM: Property worth about Rs 5.50 lakh was gutted in a fire at a showroom near Fr Agnel Polytechnic, Verna, on Monday.
According to Verna Fire Station in-charge S V Palnni, the fire broke out at the Honda showroom, where some old two-wheelers were also damaged.
Palnni informed that they used a fire tender to douse the fire and property worth about Rs 5.50 lakh was gutted in the fire. The fire personnel managed to save property worth Rs 10 lakh, he informed.
When contacted, Verna Police informed Lady Head Constable Varsha Naik is investigating the case.
Loutolim Sarpanch clarifies
MARGAO: Loutolim Sarpanch Maria Monteiro has said that she had read out a long list of development proposals at the Sunday gram sabha which were sent to the appropriate government departments in the last two years, copies of which were endorsed to the local MLA.
In a statement, she pointed that the Nuvem MLA Mickky Pacheco had said that the Sarpanch should send such development proposals through hand delivery with a covering letter, as in such instances the panchayat would also get an acknowledgement, as many a times, the proposals sent through post never reach him. The news item “that the proposals should be sent by hand delivery if the Sarpanch wished not to come to his office” is distorting the fact,” she said.
The Sarpanch further said that the MLA had only expressed his surprise that no gram sabha member has proposed any development work.
Dr Santosh Kabadi Scholarship
PANJIM: The Goa University has instituted scholarship named as Dr Santosh Kabadi Scholarship, to start from the new batch of BE from 2013.
The scholarship will be awarded every year to a Goa Engineering College student who tops the merit list of incoming class based on GCET examination. The scholarship amount is of Rs 4,000/- per month for the duration of the BE Course. The candidate will lose scholarship if he/she fails to secure minimum 60 per cent marks in the semester end examinations. The Vice Chancellor of Goa University, Dr Satish R Shetye was instrumental in getting this award.

PANJIM: The IGNOU has achieved 100 per cent placement for its students who underwent certificate in home based health care (CHBHC). The students belong to Gadchiroli district under IGNOU Regional Centre, Nagpur. Care Hospital, Nagpur conducted the interviews and of a total of 48 candidates, 2 were yet to complete 18 years and 4 students were over 40 years.
Photography expo by priest
PORVORIM: A photography exhibition ~ Eco-Yatra, by Fr Tomas Lobo, parish priest of Holy Family Church, Alto Porvorim, will be organised at the Art Gallery, Directorate of Art and Culture, Sanskruti Bhavan, Patto-Panjim, from February 4 to 6. The exhibition will showcase the scenic beauty and natural heritage of Goa, captured on camera, along with apt biblical passages. Merces panchayat staff feted
OLD GOA: Sandhya Uskaikar, a senior staff member of Merces panchayat, was felicitated at the hands of Merces Sarpanch Walter D’Sousa on Sunday, after the conclusion of the gram sabha.
Speaking at the function, D’Sousa lauded the services of Uskaikar and stated that the felicitation is the result of her hard work and dedication that she has put in through several years of work at the panchayat. A citation and a cheque was also presented to Uskaikar at the function.
Tablets to 47000 students by Feb-end
PANJIM: PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar, stressing on the need to inculcate the reading habit, said under the students Cyber Scheme as many as 47000 students studying in classes of VI and VII in Goa will be given e tablets by end of this month.
He was speaking as chief guest at A J de Almeida High School, Ponda, at a function to distribute e tablets to about 900 students. He also said the e-tablets will help to involve students in e-governance.

With this achievement, IGNOU has been able to make a breakthrough of job placement of these tribal students in the backward district of Gadchiroli district. This is the first time that any University has conducted campus interviews.
