Every role of life on Earth starts with different types of actions according to events and feelings which end up with accountability.
Most of us, if not all, indulge in with two-faced prayers like this: “Lord, don’t mind if I do something you don’t like; because, I regularly go to church and receive Communion. If I earn name, fame and wealth by cheating, please Lord, don’t mind that; as, I will not take it along with me when I die and sleep in the grave with all the money I have; and besides that Lord, for any wrong action done by me, I will repent by going for Confession every week.” Regarding the two-faced prayers of men, Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax-collector who went to the temple to pray. (Lk. 18: 10-14).

Another clip of life’s behaviour is of humility. American president, Abraham Lincoln, when he stood up for his first presidential address, one of the aristocrats got up and said: “Mr. President, you should not forget that your father used to make shoes for my family.” The whole senate laughed thinking that they had made a fool of Abraham Lincoln. Yet Lincoln with his unusual humility looked at the man and retorted, “Sir, I know that my father used to make shoes for your family and many others here … He was an unmatched cobbler who put the heart into his work. I want to ask you, have you got any complaint? If you have any complaint I can make another pair of shoes because I too am a good cobbler. But I know that nobody has ever complained about my father’s shoes and so I am proud of my father and my lineage!” The whole senate was speechless.
The line of behaviour is to fight the good with honesty that starts from one’s conscience and humility; and leave the thread of one’s quality on this planet called the Earth.
So, we have our likes and dislikes and when we listen to any good advice, we arrive at our conclusions with resistance due to our inner mind which is confused because of childhood influence with wrong beliefs. So, we move far, far from listening to good advice; and we do things mechanically like the circus elephant.
An elephant, from the days it was a calf, was tied to a pillar with a chain. When it grew up, although it had the strength to lift even a one-tonne load, it continued to feel that it couldn’t free itself of its chain. This was due to its conditioning. Many adults behave like circus elephants. What ties them down is their mind that was influenced during one’s childhood. This is best explained by the Konkani songs: “Ghadyaponn sung by Marcus Vaz; and also Goyche Bhavarthi sung by Jessica Gomes e Vaz and Comedian Domnic. Therefore, one should be extremely alert and look within by asking: “Am I mechanical or a conscious being?
Our religions provide for the freedom of choice and hence every individual born on this planet Earth will be subject to accountability about one’s performance during one’s lifetime and will either be rewarded or punished on the ‘Day of Judgment’. One day our time will come to leave and say goodbye to this planet. Death will happen only to our body and not to the soul which will ‘pass away’ to get our reward or punishment like the rich man and Lazarus. (Lk. 16: 19-31).
