Mathematician Who Correctly Predicted Last Three World Cup Winners Backs Netherlands to Lift FIFA World Cup 2026 Trophy

German mathematician Joachim Klement, who accurately predicted the winners of the last three FIFA World Cups, has forecast that the Netherlands will emerge victorious at the 2026 tournament.

Klement’s statistical model successfully identified Germany as champions in 2014, France in 2018 and Argentina in 2022, earning him widespread attention for his unconventional approach to football forecasting.

Interestingly, Klement said his original goal was to prove that predicting a World Cup winner was virtually impossible. However, when his model correctly picked Germany to win the 2014 tournament in Brazil, he admitted he was stunned by the outcome.

Speaking to Der Spiegel, Klement recalled, “The first time I was horrified when Germany became world champions in Brazil, especially because experts had insisted that no European team had ever won a World Cup in South America.”

His predictive model combines several socio-economic and sporting indicators, including a country’s GDP per capita, population size, the cultural significance of football, the national team’s world ranking, and a built-in element of randomness that he says plays a crucial role in the sport.

According to Klement’s latest simulation, the Netherlands will defeat Spain in the semifinals before overcoming Portugal in the final to claim the 2026 FIFA World Cup title. His model also predicts Portugal will eliminate England to book their place in the championship match.

Despite his impressive track record, Klement has urged football fans not to place too much faith in his projections, emphasising that the model includes a significant degree of chance and that football remains one of the world’s most unpredictable sports.

With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Klement’s latest prediction is certain to spark debate among football fans and analysts eager to see whether his remarkable streak continues.
