Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday hit out at the Congress over its criticism of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), using the phrase “angoor khatte hain” to describe the party’s reaction as sour grapes. Speaking to ANI, Goyal said discussions on the agreement began in 2006, were launched in 2007, but were abandoned in 2013 under the UPA government. He accused the Congress of lacking the courage and political will to finalise the deal. Goyal also targeted Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, calling him anti-development and blaming him for stalling progress during his tenure as environment minister. His remarks came in response to Ramesh’s claim that the FTA grants tariff relief on over 96 per cent of EU exports and could significantly increase imports from Europe.
