Sarla Maheshwari, one of the most recognisable faces of Doordarshan’s golden era, passed away on Thursday at the age of 71. Doordarshan National confirmed her death through a social media post, remembering her as a distinguished newsreader whose gentle voice and dignified presence left a lasting impression on Indian television journalism.
In its tribute, the public broadcaster praised her precise pronunciation, composed presentation, and understated style that earned viewers’ trust across the country. Veteran anchor Shammi Narang, who worked alongside her, also expressed deep grief, calling her an embodiment of grace, courtesy, and knowledge.

Maheshwari became a household name in the 1980s and 1990s, when Doordarshan dominated India’s news space. She delivered Hindi bulletins for nearly three decades, from 1976 to 2005, admired for her flawless diction and calm authority. Beginning her career while pursuing a PhD at Delhi University, she went on to define credibility for an entire generation of news anchors.
