PANJIM: In all 1037 persons, charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including heinous crimes, were set free after being acquitted of the offences booked against them.
In comparison, a mere 203 persons were convicted, as per records released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2020 under the category ‘Disposal of Persons Arrested under IPC Crimes (State/UT-wise) – 2020’. The data indicates that besides 1037 acquittals and 203 convictions, 97 individuals were discharged of the charges against them.

The report further mentions that 4486 persons were arrested and charge sheet against 4659 were filed in the courts for trial. The figures reportedly include FIRs and arrests list of the preceding period.
While the conviction rate of arrested persons is far below the acquittals, the year 2020 saw 578 cases getting acquittal orders while only 21 cases saw conviction and 53 cases were discharged. These were among total IPC cases registered during the year 2020. Ironically, the conviction rate in other smaller States such as Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland is much higher.
The trend for human trafficking offence is no different. The State recorded zero conviction as per the NCRB 2020 even as several cases are still on trial.
