Two councillors-elect have filed their nomination papers for the post of chairperson and deputy chairperson of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC).
According to CMC sources, Kindlebhag-Tarir Councillor Ratnakar Dhuri has filed nomination for the post of chairperson, while Mastimoll Councillor Sandesh Gaonkar filed his nomination for the post of deputy chairperson.
It may be recalled that about eight of the 10 elected councillors from Canacona have met Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and his cabinet ministers, both the Alemao brothers, Joaquim and Churchill, and brokered a workability agreement to run the council for the next five years, after initial bickering among the elects failed to come to any amicable solution.
Dhuri and Gaonkar will hold the charge for the first six months before rotating their posts among next in-line. The group’s remaining three male councilor elects will occupy the chairman’s post, while all four women elects will take charge of deputy chairperson during the current term.
However, the recent developments have kept two elects out of the ruling group, at least one, allegedly due to pressure enforced by outgoing council members, while the other elect reportedly as an outcome of political rivalry.
Meanwhile, Canacona Deputy Collector Shiv Kumar, an IAS officer, who until the end of election code was not handed over the charge, has taken over the charge of Chief Officer on Monday.
