The polling day took its toll on two senior citizens from Salcete in two separate incidents on Thursday.
Maria Mascarenhas, aged around 62 years and Rosario Dourado (63) died at Hospicio hospital after they are believed to have suffered heart attack standing in a queue, waiting for their turn, to cast their vote.
In the first case, Maria Mascarenhas, a resident of Nuvem, was standing in a voters queue at a polling booth anxious to cast her vote in the morning when she complained of chest pain. She was immediately rushed to the Hospicio hospital where she breathed her last.
Nuvem deputy Sarpanch, Menino Mascarenhas informed that Maria was standing in a queue when the incident occurred.
The second incident occurred this evening at the polling booth at the Presentation Convent School, Margao. Rosario was inside the polling station and the polling officials had put the indelible ink on his finger after checking the documents. He, however, collapsed before he could cast his vote. Dourado, who is believed to have suffered a stroke, was taken to Hospicio hospital where he was declared dead.
GPCC general secretary Vijay Sardesai and other Congress workers visited the hospital this evening upon hearing the tragic news.
