South Goa Police booked nearly 200 cases of drunken driving on the last day of 2018 besides managing the heavy traffic that descended mostly on the beaches of the district and the elaborate arrangements proved successful as not a single fatal accident was reported.
Speaking to media persons Superintendent of Police Arvind Gawas disclosed that while the police personnel who were also regulating the traffic booked 99 cases of drunken driving the traffic police booked 93 cases besides managing the parking lots at some of the beaches.
Contrary to the claim that there were less tourists on the New Year Eve according to Gawas the tourists were there in regular numbers. “I travelled in the Dristhi vehicle along the beaches of South Goa and I could see the actual crowd present there,” he said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police South Prabod Shirvoikar disclosed that around 1000 vehicles were parked in the parking lot at Bogmalo beach while at Canacona there were 500 vehicles and at Benaulim around 600 vehicles were parked. The highest number of vehicles were parked at the Colva parking lot where 1,400 vehicles were spotted.
The traffic cell booked 93 cases of drunken driving with Ponda police booking the highest number of such cases as they registered 30 cases. While Vasco police booked 17 cases, Margao traffic cell booked 13 cases followed by Dabolim Airport police who registered 10 cases and eight cases each were booked by Canacona and Colva police with Curchorem police registering 4 cases and Quepem police registering only 1 case.
