PONDA: In a powerful collision between a truck and an Omni van at a sharp turn at Kapileshwarim, Kavlem, six occupants in the van were seriously injured.
Four, including the driver of car, have been shifted to GMC with leg fractures. It is learnt that all the occupants in Omni van were returning from a picnic to Kavlem while the speeding truck engaged in hot-mixing of road at proceeding in opposite direction to Ponda from Talavalim.
The truck driver fled the spot after the accident. Following the mishap the van driver Abijeet Lavu Naik (36) was seriously injured and trapped in the vehicle while three others suffered fractures on their legs. Driver Abijeet Naik remained almost half hour trapped in the van. However, locals gathered rescued him using cutter before Fire Tender personnel could reach the spot. The other three occupants of van who received fractures on leg are Manthan Shanu Naik(16) Akhil Derendra Naik(19) and Caitan Alex Fernandes (35).
All the injured were shifted to Sub-district Hospital Ponda and then to GMC. Kedar Naik(18) and Ivan Fernandis (19) are undergoing treatment in Ponda Sub District Hospital.
A police force was deployed to control the mob who were irked over the accident.
