PANJIM: The city was hit by an unprecedented power cut of almost seven hours Thursday, plunging most areas of the capital in darkness as two old switches in two transformers were burnt and had to be replaced, officials said. The Department only managed to restore power to most areas in around the capital by 7 pm.
However, due to the gravity of the situation temporary measures were employed
and a permanent solution will have to be found officials concede.
Electricity to Panjim is supplied through underground cables, but the State capital has faced major power disruptions from Monday night.
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar confirmed to media that there was some transformer issue that had resulted in the power disruption.
Parrikar had also called a meeting Thursday morning with officials to find ways to mitigate and sort out this issue of frequent power cuts. He has, however, attributed the cuts to gusty winds.
