PANJIM: Nearly 48 per cent of the total Class X students registered for May 2021 Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board exam, have opted for currently-introduced Mathematics Level 2, as the difficultly level of the questions is said to be lower than the traditional Mathematics (Level 1) paper.

The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) had introduced Mathematics Level 2 for Class X from the current academic year following recommendation from the Academic council.
Of the total 23,000 students registered for Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination, nearly 11,000 have opted for Mathematics Level 2 paper. SSC exam is scheduled to start from May 13 and will end on May 31. “The syllabus of Mathematics Level 2 is same as that of Level 1, only question paper will be different with difficulty level of the questions on lower side,” Goa Board chairman Bhagirath Shetye said.
He explained the students that who do not prefer to go for Science stream or polytechnic courses can go for Mathematics Level 2. “These students can only go for Commerce, Arts or Vocational stream,” the chairman said.
As per the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2019-20, conducted by National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the performance in mathematics of Class X students in Goa, is below the national average. The data revealed recently states that the average performance of student in mathematics is 33 per cent, while the national average is 34 per cent.
To analyse the students’ performance, the GBSHSE, since April 2020 Board examination, has been maintaining a database of the Class X students question-wise, in addition to aggregate marks, to identify weak and strong areas of the subject for the students.
The Board is maintaining the database of question-wise marks obtained by each Class X students in Mathematics, Science and English in addition to aggregate marks.
