An attempted theft at the Shri Dev Vetal Temple in Alorna, Goa, has sparked concern among local residents and devotees regarding the safety and security of religious sites in the region. Between the night of August 14 and the early hours of August 15, 2025, an unidentified individual allegedly tried to break into the temple by forcefully breaking the iron locks on the main door.
The incident came to light when temple authorities arrived in the morning and noticed that the locks had been severely damaged. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, they promptly informed the Mopa Airport Police, who responded quickly by visiting the site and conducting a spot inspection, or panchanama. Raghunath Halarnkar, the president of the Shree Vetal Devasthan in Alorna, officially lodged a police complaint, emphasizing the gravity of the attempted break-in and its implications for the security of religious establishments in the area.

The police have since initiated a formal investigation into the matter and are currently working to identify the suspect. They are reviewing available CCTV footage from the temple complex and nearby areas in hopes of gathering clues that might lead to an arrest. Preliminary reports suggest that the culprit fled the scene without managing to steal any valuables, as the locked doors prevented entry into the sanctum.
Nevertheless, the attempt has rattled the local community, who worry that such incidents could embolden other miscreants to target temples and other vulnerable places of worship. There have been similar reports of thefts and break-ins at temples in North Goa’s Pernem taluka over recent months, highlighting a disturbing trend that has put religious institutions on alert.
