Says majority of councillors want him to continue

MARGAO: Completing one year in office on Wednesday, Margao Municipal Chairperson Arthur D’Silva said his continuance in office will be decided by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat along with the city fathers.
During an interaction with the media on the occasion of completing one year in office, Arthur denied that councillors had raised the demand for his resignation after completing 11 months last month as per an agreement.
“There were only three councillors who raised the demand, but majority of them want me to continue. If they want me to step down, I will vacate the chair immediately,” he said.
Replying to a question, Arthur said he had initiated a host of measures to ease traffic congestion in the town during the last one year, especially on the traffic front. “The old fish market has been cleared of the fish vendors with the support of the SGPDA market vendors. Many kiosks causing obstruction to traffic were cleared,” he said, adding that he has initiated the process to implement the bio-metric finger scan readers in the civic body, awaiting implementation since half a decade.
On the Sonsodo garbage management, Arthur said that a sub-committee headed by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has been constituted to take the process forward, especially on door-to-door waste collection.
While saying that the civic body had proposed to the government and GSUDA to sanction a parking lot at the old fish market, the MMC chairperson exuded confidence that the government would soon sanction the parking project.
“We had proposed a host of developmental projects to the government. I am hopeful that the government would give financial package to the civic body to take up long term projects benefiting the city”, he added.
