MARGAO: With successive governments denying rights and powers to the Panchayat Raj Institutions, an association of elected members comprising of panchayat and Zilla members is mooted to fight for the devolution of powers, funds and functions under the Goa Panchayat Raj Act.
The proposal was unveiled by South Goa Zilla Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues at the marketing symposium organized by the zilla body at the Ravindra Bhavan here on Tuesday.
“This association of the elected panchayat and ZP members will act as a cohesive force to secure the rights of the Panchayati Raj institutions. Our leaders have no time for the panchayats and Zilla Panchayat. We have to manage ourselves. Our pleas for the devolution of powers and functions have fallen on deaf ears”, she said.
She asserted that the Association of Elected Panchayat and ZP members will help voice their grievances forcefully.
She appealed to the Panchayat and ZP members to leave aside their differences and coming under one banner to fight for the powers and rights bestowed under the 73rd Amendment to the Constitution.
