Award for Vellore Medical College

Porvorim: Christian Medical College, Vellore in Tamil Nadu, which is more than a century old, has received the award for Asia’s best Private Educational Institution in the Medical-Pharma Category from the World’s Consulting and Research Corporation. It is also the first among the oldest and the largest in the country to receive a Certificate of Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH). The NABH has designed a comprehensive health care standard for hospitals and health care providers with 600 stringent objective elements that the hospital must achieve. Christian Medical College Vellore has also been adjudged as top among 100 best and fast growing private educational institutions in the country and has received the award for the same this year. Goan doctors in the past have pursued their post graduate degrees through this prestigious college and some are also currently doing the same.

Davorlim: The political instability that hit the Davorlim panchayat village has taken a new twist on Wednesday. A day after six members of the panchayat body moved a no trust motion against Sarpanch Herculano Niasso, a group of six members led by Niasso tabled a no confidence motion against Deputy Sarpanch Magdalina Rocha on Monday. What’s interesting to note is that the name of Panch Hemant Kambli figures in both the no confidence notices. The notice against the deputy is signed by Sarpanch Niasso and members Imran Mohammed, Hemant Kambli, Rajani Raikar, Terezina Raikar and Abel Santano Colaco.

BICHOLIM: Seven panchas have moved a no-confidence motion against Karapur-Sarvan Sarpanch Divya Karkhande on Wednesday. The signatories to the no-confidence motion include Dheeraj Sawant, Deepak Dhawaskar, Mahesh Sawant, Rajesh Naik, Sachhit Sawant, Aryan Gaonkar, Jayeshree Tari and Shamim Madar. Meanwhile, the resignations of Narve Sarpanch Prathista Mishal and Latambarcem Sarpanch Damini Gawas were accepted. No-confidence motions were also moved against Kudne Sarpanch Poonam Pethkar and Pilgao Deputy Sarpanch Babaji Gaonkar.

Mapusa: An RO plant was handed over to the Headmaster of St Britto High School, Mapusa at a brief ceremony held in the school. The President of Rotary Club Panaji, Dr Prasad Netravalkar handed the RO plant in the presence of past presidents Anil Sardesai, Andrew D’Souza and Nester Sequeria. The Headmaster, Fr Cedric Fernandes thanked the Rotary Club Panaji for their generous gift saying the students will now get pure water to drink daily. In the past the club had sponsored a LCD projector, a laptop and a screen for the school.

ANJUNA: The scouts and guides of St Michael Convent High School, Vagator-Anjuna have been the number one unit for scouting and guiding activities in Goa for the last four consecutive years and moved a notch further by holding a Tritiya Sopan testing camp in May, wherein 5 guides and 3 scouts got through the grind and were declared successful by external examiners. The school award these scouts and guides the proficiency and Tritiya Sopan badges on June 25.

Eco club inaugurated at Mapusa school

MAPUSA: St Britto High School Eco Club 2014-15 was inaugurated on June 21, at the hands of noted environmentalist and conservationist Amrut Singh. Singh gave a brief talk on the need and the importance of conservation of snakes and their role in the ecosystem. He also showed students the different kinds of snakes and how to identify them. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by teacher Ian Pinto. 

New panel at United Club of Utorda 

UTORDA: United Club of Utorda installed their club governing board for 2014-15 at a function at Utorda hall. Piyush Tyagi, General Manager of Royal Orchids Resorts Utorda was the chief guest and complimented the club for the social service rendered to the community. President Agnelo read the annual activities report while IPP Joaquim Fernandes conducted the proceedings. Francis Cardozo spoke in the open sessions while Sharlet Fernandes compered the function. Michael Monteiro was installed as new member. The new board members are Agnelo Pereira (president), Anthony L C Fernandes, Trindade Fernandes, Rocky Noronha, Anthony Pereira, Remedious Monterio, Francis Morais, Johny Gomes, Emy Pereira, Praxedes Fernandes, Ophelia Rodrigues, Anthony Rodriques, Tony Fernandes, Albino D’ Costa, Elvis Mendes, Joao Paul Fernandes, Livio Pereira, Ana Pacheco and Liberata Fernandes. 

OLD GOA: A woman has accused four persons of kidnapping her minor daughter at Merces. According to Old Goa Police, mother of the victim girl complained that the four accused persons kidnapped her daughter, who escaped from Apna Ghar Merces along with other juvenile. The complainant claimed that the accused took her daughter to Haveri-Karnataka. Old Goa Police registered the case under Section 363 r/w 34 IPC and Section 2 of GCA and is investigating the case.

BICHOLIM: A resident of Bhailipeth-Bicholim died of injuries he had sustained in a road accident at Karapur-Tisk, Bicholim. According to reports, the accident occurred on June 23 when Shantaram Teli lost control of his motorcycle on a speed breaker at Karapur-Tisk. He rushed to GMC Hospital in Bambolim and his condition was critical. He died of injuries on Tuesday.

OLD GOA: A resident of Chimbel has accused a man from Bhatlem-Panjim of cheating him to the tune of Rs 12 lakh. According to Old Goa Police, Sunil Verma of Chinchwada-Chimbel complained that the accused dishonestly induced him to deliver Rs 12 lakh as payment of infrastructure tax of Town and Country Planning Department, Pernem, towards construction of a residential building in Chopdem-Pernem. The complainant further stated that the accused dishonestly misappropriated the amount for his own use, which was specifically delivered to him to pay the approval fees of the Town and Country Planning. The complaint also states that the Challan copy shows payment of Rs 12,00,575 in the treasury of TCP Mapusa, but when enquired about the authenticity of the Challan, it came to light that it was forged and no payment was made in the treasury of TCP Mapusa towards construction of residential building, thus cheating Verma to the tune of Rs 12 lakh. PSI Sagun Sawant is investigating the case.

SANGUEM: Several large tree trunks which were recently cut down by the PWD and Forest department at Sanguem along the Sanguem-Curchorem road have been left dangerously by the side of the main road at Kharkhatiaghati-Sanguem.

Earlier last week, the PWD (Roads and Bridges Section) had cut 15 trees by the side of the main road as they were dangerously leaning across the road and were obstructing the smooth flow of traffic. After the trees were cut by the PWD, the smaller branches were taken by the forest department. However, several tree trunks which could not be lifted by labourers have been left abandoned without any warning signs to motorists by the roadside at Dando and Kharkhatiaghati.

Some tree trunks almost touch the main road and there is a possibility of road mishaps as motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, could easily miss out these trunks at night.

PONDA: The Kavlem Shantadurga temple panel has alleged fraud in the temple property, after claiming that some gold items have gone missing. The Kavlem Shantadurga temple committee has filed a complaint with the Ponda police and the Ponda mamlatdar in this matter. In their complaint, the present temple committee stated that some valuables of the temple were not handed over to them by a former temple committee. When contacted, Ponda PI C L Patil told Herald that police had received a complaint from the temple committee, stating that some items have gone missing. PI Patil added that the mamladar is investigating the matter, as the temple committees come under the jurisdiction of the mamlatdar.
