Calangute roads in bad shape, say Cong workers

CALANGUTE: The roads in Calangute are in a pathetic condition due to negligence, non-maintenance and sub-standard work done by the contractors, Calangute block Congress workers have said in a memorandum to the PWD chief engineer.

“People who travel to work places and tourists are having great difficulty due to the poor condition of the roads. In many places, there are water-logging issues which are leading to bad condition of roads and potholes, due to no proper drainages and uneven asphalt layers,” the Calangute Congress said, urging the PWD to immediately repair the dilapidated roads.

“The road from Piety chapel Khobravaddo to Baga has caved in due to the sewerage work and even though the roads were hot-mixed just before the rains, they have developed potholes and patches of the roads have come out at every 20 metres,” they said.

They pointed out that the road from Boa Viagem chapel to new substation at Gauravaddo, which was dug for laying electrical cables has not been restored after the Electricity Department work was completed. Also, the road in front of St Alex Church has developed huge potholes due to the sub-standard work done, and at the traffic island which has been newly demarcated near Bhodkovodd no asphalt work has been done, due to which the entire area is in a very bad condition.

“We therefore demand that these roads be repaired immediately, a complete audit be undertaken and the contractors or individual responsible for the brazen negligence and dangerous conditions of the roads be held responsible,” the Congress workers said after meeting the executive engineer at Mapusa on Friday.
