AGONDA: Canacona Municipal Councillor Dhiraj Naik Gaonkar has demanded that the Chief Officer and NHAI officials initiate action against fish vendors who transact business under the flyover at Char Rasta, here as they pose risk to the traffic.
“Canacona municipality has its own fish market where vendors from Talpona and other areas do business. Whereas, fishermen from Palolem sell their fish by the roadside of the highway under the flyover.

Since the fish sold here are is caught in a traditional manner, local fish lovers gather in huge numbers. This is unsafe for the motorists and I’ve asked the authorities concerned to initiate action against them on various occasions for reasons best known to them,” said Gaonkar.
“As per the request made by Dhiraj Naik Gaonkar the respective fish vendors were removed from the place. However, they have asked for 15 days time which we have agreed on humanitarian ground.
A new fish market with all the facilities will be built at the estimated
cost of Rs 6 cr,” said Chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaonkar.
